Our walls have been waiting and it’s finally almost time! Gallery27 (@gallery27) is pleased to announce the dates of our upcoming show Hopscotch.

Taking from the timeless children’s street game — Hopscotch, looks at childhood through a lens of nostalgia, bringing together the fantastical alongside what may seem ordinary from afar. There is a revealing of subliminal desires and dreams, an honesty that comes along with nativity, and a parallel absurdity.

The show will take place from the 9th of December 2022 to the 13th of January 2023 at Gallery27,
Pancheera Paul Road, Star Junction, Mattancherry. p.o, Kochi.
The show is curated by Shristi Sainani (@shristi_sainani)

Watch this space for the reveal of the artist list! We announce this Thursday.
Artwork in the video by @harshaduru

“Returning Echo”

The show “Returning Echo” is the result of my reflection over the recent floods in Kerala. The mindless race of increased consumerism and devastation of nature for real estate development triggered unimaginable disaster on the humanity. Paradoxically, the key elements of consumerism like buildings, cars, plastic products, etc., were seen to be turning into waste due to the fury of the nature. This has been portrayed in my paintings where plastic bottles and other materials have been seen floating in the floodwater.

Sukesan Kanka

The show titled “Returning Echo” is a rich collection of paintings by artist Sukesan Kanka. These paintings focus upon various topics ranging from migration to repercussions of natural disasters and war. They also try to explore the subliminal and inexplicit effects of such aberrations. The artist endeavours to throw light upon both internal and external experiences using a dynamic combination of fantasy, realism, etc. The bold colours and immensely detailed compositions of his artworks naturally draw attention of the viewers to contemplate upon the theme. Inspired by the classic cinema, his artworks painted with deep reds and greens are like forgotten narratives reminding the viewers about their existence. Moved by the extremely intense storyline (study) of cinema and inspired by Peter Brueghel and Bosch, he succeeds in portraying life on canvas by intelligently combining its both fantasy and romantic aspects. As an artist, his main motive is not to give out message, rather to depict thought-provoking narratives that remain outside the radar of journalistic documentation or reporting.
It is interesting to note the range of themes covered in his artworks. Due to his movement from Kerala to New Delhi, his early artworks raise awareness about migration by portraying its travails. His other paintings talk loudly about love and war. The series “Love and War” is a poignant take on the current politics of war and hatred practiced across both public and private space. His latest works pay attention to the beauty of the nature by portraying gardens and similar spaces. Born and brought up in Kerala, artworks of Sukesan are incomplete without the coming together of nature and concept. He is one among those small group of artists who have resisted the allure of new mediums. His attentiveness towards details comes from his allegiance to the goldsmith family. His skill to blend art history knowledge with the art of creating detailed compositions makes his works more interesting and vibrant. Sukesan is devoted to the act of creating art. He dreams of making a masterpiece that will adorn the walls of museums.

Once bitten twice shy. As lovers of art we refuse to believe that we have been bitten. Nor do we have any attention of shying away from art. When we started Chaitanya Art Gallery in 2007 we were just one of the handful of galleries in little Kochi wakign up to the world of art around the corner. Little did we realise that within less than a decade we would be struggling to turn the corner. It was not that we were not aware of the basic timeline that an average gallery followed: the first year you lose money, the second year you break even and in the third you make a profit. It just didn’t happen that way. Passionate as we were about what we pursued, we kept on, what else, losing money.
