K R Sunil is an Indian photographer, painter and sculptor. His photography lends a rare, evocative quality to his human subjects, capturing their ‘livedness’ in ways that bring to the fore the experiences and the memories that make them unique. Pushing rigid boundaries between photography and the written word, Sunil brings text into play as well, accompanying his photographs with chiseled essays, each refracting and bouncing layers of meaning off each other. This fusion helps viewers to unravel the photographs with a rare understanding and compassion for the subjects portrayed in them.

K R Sunil graduated in sculpture from the Fine Arts College, Thrissur, Kerala. He won the Lalit Kala Akademi Award (for fine arts students) in 1997. In 2016, he was awarded the India Habitat Center’s Photosphere Grant resulting in an exhibition of his photographs at the Centre as well as at RMIT Gallery, Melbourne Australia.
